Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham criticized Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese following Reese’s social media activities regarding her past and present romantic interests.
The controversy arose when Reese reposted a “lowlight” video of Jalen Durent getting dunked on by Orlando Magic Center Wendell Carter Jr., Reese’s current boyfriend.
Rumor has it that Duren is Reese’s ex. Fans and analysts were quick to view the post as a calculated joke, in keeping with the intensity of their first-round playoff match.
Cunningham and co-host West Wilson discussed the situation on their podcast Show Me Something. Cunningham suggested that Reese seemed intent on embarrassing Duren.
Cunningham said: “Something must have happened [Reese] to avoid wanting to, I don’t know, embarrass him somehow.
When her co-host suggested there was no conflict, Cunningham advised Reese to focus on her current relationship instead of the past drama.
“But then move on! Worry about the current boyfriend,” Cunningham replied.
The viral social media post led to Detroit fans chanting Reese’s name at Carter Jr. during a high-stakes Game 7.
Despite off-court distractions, Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons staged a spectacular comeback, winning three straight games to topple the Magic and advance to the second round.
Angel Reese has not responded to Cunningham’s criticism as she prepares for the start of the WNBA season.
