John Wall has been named president of basketball operations at Howard University and returns to Washington after a long NBA career with the Washington Wizards.
School officials confirmed the appointment to ESPN and said Wall has already played an active role in shaping the future of the program.
The former NBA All-Star began talks with Howard earlier this year after serving as the team’s honorary captain during a January game.
Wall has reportedly expressed interest in eventually working in basketball leadership at the professional level.
In his new role, Wall will assist with player recruitment, transfer evaluations, squad management and name, image and likeness agreements.
He will also help guide strategy along with head coach Kenny Blakeney and general manager Daniel Marks.
Wall retired from basketball in August after averaging 18.7 points and 8.9 assists during his NBA career.
The five-time All-Star spent most of his career with Washington, but also played for the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers.
His appointment follows similar moves by current and former NBA stars, including Stephen Curry and Trae Young, who have also taken on administrative roles at college basketball programs.
