Rory McIlroy says he is confident his troublesome foot injury will not affect his chances at the US PGA Championship after completing a practice session at Aronimink near Philadelphia.
The world number two had briefly raised concerns earlier this week when he stopped his practice round after just three holes due to pain in his right foot.
“Because I didn’t think I could run the next six,” McIlroy said as he explained why he left the course in a golf cart.
“It hurt and I felt a little soft when I had to walk in because of a little toe.”
McIlroy said the problem started last week at the Truist Championship after he developed a blister under the toenail of his little toe.
The 37-year-old later removed the nail and changed footwear to ease the discomfort.
“I found out and separated the little toe from the other and a little cushioning around it definitely helped,” he said.
After completing nine practice holes on Wednesday, McIlroy added: “I was pleasantly surprised at how good it felt.”
“When you’re walking downhill, when your foot slips all the way into your shoe, it can be a little tricky for me, but that’s fine. A mountain out of a molehill.”
McIlroy begins his American PGA campaign alongside Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm.
