Mark Scheifele scored a hat trick, including the overtime winner, as Canada defeated Norway 6-5 in the Hockey World Cup on Thursday.
Scheifele sealed the win in overtime after combining with Evan Bouchard and Macklin Celebrini on a three-way passing play.
“It felt good (to score). I felt a little bit snake-bitten in the last few games, but we have such a great team. It was such a resilient effort from everyone, and it was great to get the winner,” Scheifele said after the game.
“Today’s win was certainly not how we planned it, but we give credit to Norway because they played a tough game and got pucks in our net.”
Norway stunned Canada by taking an early 2–0 lead before Scheifele scored twice to tie the game after the opening period.
Halfway through the third period, the Norwegians regained a 5-4 lead thanks to goals from Noah Steen and Tinus Luc Koblar.
Canada forced overtime after Ryan O’Reilly scored with an extra attacker on the ice.
“Nothing surprises you in this tournament. Give credit to Norway because they came out hard and had us in trouble straight away,” O’Reilly said.
