Lizzo recently took another major legal blow due to copyright issues.
The The truth hurts crooner is reportedly giving a peek at an as-yet-untitled song in August. That led to criticism when she mentioned Sydney Sweeney’s ads for the jeans company.
Yet GRC Trust’s lawyers are more interested in music. They claim that the singer sampled and copied parts of the original song ‘Win Or Lose (We Tried)’ without permission. TMZ report.
The lawsuit also alleges that the parties tried to reach a deal to sample the work but never reached an agreement.
The GRC trust points out that Lizzo and Atlantic Records deliberately used the composition of the original song for commercial gain, without paying for a license.
Interestingly, Lizzo’s spokesperson expressed shock at the charges over an unreleased song.
“We are surprised that The GRC Trust has filed this lawsuit,” the representative said in a press statement shared via Daily mail.
The singer’s rep explains, “To be clear, the song has never been commercially released or monetized, and no decision has been made at this time regarding a future commercial release of the song.”
However, in legal documents filed in California, GRC Trust claimed that the singer “made profits that they would not have realized had they not infringed” on Win Or Lose (We Tried), originally recorded by soul singer Sam Dees.
The company’s lawyers said they “attempted to resolve the dispute informally” with Lizzo’s team, “but had reached an impasse, necessitating the filing of this case.”
Meanwhile, the legal team requested an injunction “to block further distribution of the song; and a financial settlement equal to all of the defendants’ profits, plus all of GRC’s losses”, due to the alleged copyright infringement.
