New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham put in a monumental performance against the West Indies on the first day of the Third Test at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on December 18, 2025.
As reported by BBC Sports, the openers made 323 for the first wicket, surpassed only by Glen Turner and Terry Jarvis’ 387-run stand against the West Indies at Georgetown in 1972.
Meanwhile, New Zealand leads the three-match series 1-0. The spectacular partnership, which crossed 86.4 overs, is the joint 12th highest opening partnership in men’s Test cricket and only the eighth stand of 300 or more for any wicket for New Zealand.
The all-time New Zealand record was set by Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones, who added 467 for the third wicket against Sri Lanka in Wellington in 1991.
This was Conway’s sixth Test century; he faced 279 balls and hit 25 fours.
Taking the match forward, Latham – who won the toss – was dropped by wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach on 104, before eventually being caught by a diving Roston Chase who first slipped off the bowling of Kemar Roach.
Latham faced 246 balls, hitting 15 fours and a six, and now has 15 Test hundreds. This record-breaking performance was an incredible example of combining composure in the first session with powerful play in the second and third.
