Jane Seymour has opened up about the success of Somewhere in time.
Speak with People magazine, the actress, who starred opposite the late Christopher Reeve in the 1980 film, shared that the film’s survival was never guaranteed.
Seymour said: “The film almost didn’t get released. Universal didn’t publicize it [at] all. There was an actor’s strike, so Chris and I weren’t even allowed to advertise it.”
“And then it got the worst reviews of all time,” she added.
When the film premiered in the US, it failed to make an impression. However, the film quietly exploded abroad and Seymour suddenly found himself surrounded by huge crowds.
Seymour explained, “The next thing I knew, a friend of mine in Hong Kong said, ‘You have no idea. Your film is the number one film in Hong Kong. People watch it twenty times.”
“And I went to Hong Kong and was harassed. I thought I was one of the Beatles,” she added.
Seymour recalled being surrounded by armed guards and people crushing her: “I thought, ‘What? That movie that no one wanted to see?’ And it just got bigger and bigger.”
Jane Seymour noted that Somewhere in Time’s fan base is huge: they even dress up like her and reenact scenes from the film.
