Alex Cooper has contributed to the media industry’s steep learning curve.
While it appears on Phoebe Gates and Sophia Kianni’s The Burnouts podcastReflecting on her past, Cooper said she had “made mistakes in trusting people” early in her career.
“I wish I had put more things in writing so I could substantiate what really happened,” she began.
Moving forward, Cooper also discussed the difficulty of separating professional decisions from personal feelings, especially when building a brand from the ground up.
“It’s so crazy how much emotion can come into business. As much as everyone likes it, it’s business, it’s not personal – everyone takes it damn personally, especially when it’s your own company or your brand.”
She also admitted that she was heartbroken when people judged her intentions and misrepresented the conversations she had with them in good faith.
She explained, “Some of my missteps in business came when I was honest with someone, who then turned it around and said I had done something completely different. And I thought, ‘Wait, that never happened.'”
She concluded by saying, “I guess technically I should have put that in writing – so I guess I’ve put it all in writing now.”
