Ryan Coogler has reflected on the difficult time he faced following the release of his film Fruitvale Station, starring Michael B. Jordan.
In a conversation with The Hollywood ReporterCoogler reflected on the 2013 film, claiming that he fell into depression after the film’s release.
“I felt the need to make that movie, but I wasn’t convinced I belonged in what came next,” he began.
“Coming from where I come from, it’s not necessarily always an affirming environment. You can convince yourself that someone is playing a prank on you.”
“You can convince yourself that none of this is real: ‘I don’t deserve to be here. This place isn’t for me.’ ”
Furthermore, beyond his personal doubts, Coogler admitted that he could handle the immense pressure that comes with being a young artist tackling systemic tragedies.
“That movie was made by someone who didn’t really understand how the world worked,” Coogler continued.
He concluded by saying: “I played football all my life and went to school. I didn’t study all the factors that led to Oscar being executed on camera. I know more now – and it doesn’t make you optimistic.”
