Euphoria season 3 left fans shocked with a brutal twist!
When controversial character Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi, met a gruesome end, show creator Sam Levinson explained the decision.
Spoiler alert: the character died after being buried alive by loan sharks and later bitten by a rattlesnake while trapped in a coffin. Despite the best efforts of the character’s wife Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, Nate could not be saved.
According to Sam, he wanted Nate’s demise to be deeply disturbing to the audience. He said, “There’s this funny thing where I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma and with that in mind I always think, ‘How can I give it to them?'”
“How can I give them what they want, but make it so gruesome and terrifying that by the time it happens, the audience isn’t so sure they wanted it?” Sam added.
Sam revealed that the idea of the rattlesnake came to him while driving through Los Angeles with his wife, saying he suddenly imagined a snake entering the coffin through a small pipe as Nate struggled to escape.
The creator recalled, “It was one of those beautiful days in LA where the weather was perfect. We’re listening to Otis Redding. The windows are open and we’re driving to Warner Brothers and I’m looking out the window.”
I added, “I just had this image of a rattlesnake coming up to this pipe. It’s pounding and the snake can feel the movement in the ground. And I thought, what if the snake goes into the pipe and then it gets stuck in the box with this rattlesnake?”
“It’s kind of a funny moment where you realize that not all dark scenes come from a dark place,” he noted.
It is relevant to mention that Euphoria season 3 ends on May 31.
