Macaulay Culkin revealed that his life improved significantly after he made the difficult decision to cut ties with his father, Kit Culkin.
The Home alone star opened up about his relationship with his estranged father on monday during an appearance on the latest episode of the SlimLess podcast.
When asked if he still spoke to his parents, Macaulay replied: “I had a pretty bitter relationship with my father, famously. Once I was able to push him out of it a little bit, my quality of life on a day-to-day level definitely improved.”
For those unfamiliar, Kit was the former child actor’s manager in the late 1980s. Macaulay was only 14 years old when he stopped acting.
“I was done,” the actor recalled during the podcast episode. “I was like, I hope you all make your money, because there’s nothing coming from me anymore. I made my name, I made my mark, I made my fortune.”
The My girl star added that he made enough money to “play video games all day and do nothing.”
“I wanted to take a break, and I said I was being very burdened. I wasn’t being listened to. That was something that really affected me, and affected my work and things like that,” Macaulay recalls.
“It was like, ‘Oh, I’m on the hamster wheel and I can’t get off.’ Once I had some autonomy and choice in my life, I grabbed it with both hands,” he added.
