Mads Mikkelsen gets candid on working in ‘Star Wars’ prequel ‘Rogue One’

Mads Mikkelsen Reflects on ‘Rogue One’ Script: ‘It Kept Changing’

Mads Mikkelsen plays Galen Erso Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Although the 2016 film was a hit, the star now reveals that the film’s script was unfinished even during shooting.

“It kept changing,” he says Variety. “You’d think that’s already been done. I don’t think they’ve ever closed a draft.”

However, Mads adds that the “unsurprisingly unfinished” script was due to the creator’s efforts to make it better.

“I think they kept working on it and improvising and re-recording things and then coming up with a better idea that’s kind of viable for a character like mine. I mean, I had my mission,” he notes.

While Mads was fine with this evolution of the script, he found it difficult for the film’s leading couple.

“I knew what it was, but it was clearly difficult for the two young heroes because they didn’t know exactly what they were carrying in a luggage compartment.”

The Fantastic animals actor also recalls an emotionally heavy scene of his in Rogue One, but as the story kept changing, it became difficult to film.

“That was a brutal, I would say, day, but it was days because there were a lot of changes in the story,” says the actor, referring to his “It Must Be Destroyed” scene.

“We were going back and forth, and it was raining. When you do artificial rain, it’s almost impossible to do that in a long scene without having freezing water. So I lay there freezing to death, trying to keep my eyes open,” Mads concludes.
