Mariah Carey keeps the words of wisdom in the neighborhood her deceased mother, Patricia Carey, once shared with her.
The Grammy-winning singer became emotional as he spoke with SZA during the Flower Event of Apple Music in Jazz in Lincoln Center on Wednesday 24 September, where she opened about advice that her entire life and career stayed with her.
“I think one of the most important things she said, the only thing she said to me, and it was clear, and it was there,” Mariah, 56, remembered by tears.
“She said,” Don’t say I’m making it. Say when I make it. “So … I’m going to become emotional. “
SZA quickly offered comfort and reminded her of the impact she had as an artist and a mother.

During the conversation Mariah also thought about Patricia’s own musical journey.
“My mother was an opera singer. She actually made her debut in Lincoln Center, so I was always close to music since I was small,” she shared.
With a smile, she added that her mother “was also a diva because she was an opera singer, and that is the definition of the word when you look it up.”
When asked to describe what her mother meant by ‘Diva’, Mariah explained: “A singer, a singing woman who, you know, sometimes a difficult woman, sometimes they say that, and I don’t think that’s great because I don’t think that’s the real definition. It is a woman who sings, usually a soprano. “
The moment came just a few weeks after Mariah thought he thought about the loss of both her mother and her alienated sister, Alison, who died on the same day in August 2024.
