Steven Spielberg has warned that Hollywood will ‘run out of gas’ if the industry does not continue to invest in original projects and stories.
The iconic director has called on his fellow filmmakers to ‘tell more original stories’, instead of making so many reboots, sequels and spin-offs.
During his very first appearance at CinemaCon, he said: “If everything we make is known, brand IP [Intellectual Property]we will run out of gas.”
The filmmaker continued, “There is nothing more important than giving audiences visual stories, and that can be in any form, but we need to tell more original stories.”
Spielberg also praised Universal Entertainment chief Donna Langley for moving to an exclusive 45-day, seven-weekend theatrical window for the 2027 film releases.
“Audiences will find what they want to see, whether the movies are big or small, but studios need to help us by vastly expanding the exclusive windows, like Donna Langley just did,” he added, going on to say, “Today I have to be greedy. Am I supposed to be 60 days? Am I supposed to be 120 days?”
Also at CinemaCon, Spielberg premiered a new trailer for his upcoming film Day of the unveilingstarring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo.
The sci-fi film is about a government plot to cover up the arrival of visitors from another planet, and Spielberg believes it will lead to people asking “a lot of questions” about what else could be out there.
He said: “I have been curious about what happened in the night sky since I was a child. The world became more and more accepting of the fact that we are probably not alone.”
“I believe this film is going to answer questions and this film is going to cause a lot of people to ask a lot of questions,” the film said. Jaws director added.
“All you need from start to finish is a seatbelt.”
Spielberg’s comments come after he recently praised Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films as “one of my favorite science fiction films of all time”.
He told it Empire magazine: “Lately I’ve been loving the Dune movies. They are among my favorite science fiction movies, not just recently, but of all time. Especially the second movie.”
