Caitlin Clark was ruled out of the Indiana Fever’s game against the Portland Fire on Wednesday night due to a back problem.
Fever coach Stephanie White said Clark woke up before the game with stiffness and pain in her back.
“It’s not the time to take a risk. We just want to be very careful,” White said.
She added that Clark’s absence was not related to cargo management and said the team does not currently expect the problem to occur in the long term.
“She’s healthy. We’re not managing anything. This is just an issue that we want to make sure we have the time to get done,” she said.
Clark missed practice on Tuesday and instead underwent treatment before beginning individual workouts.
The 2024 number one draft pick returns from an injury last season, in which she played just 13 games.
Earlier this month, Clark revealed her back was “getting out of whack quite quickly” after briefly leaving a match for treatment before returning to the court.
“That moment when my back tightened, I think that almost gave me confidence because I came back in and played eight more minutes, so I felt great,” Clark said last week.
