Tyler Posey is diving deep into the murder mystery genre, and he hopes it will eventually lead him to a role in the series Knives out franchise.
“I love Knives out so much,” said the 34-year-old actor We weekly while discussing his latest role as Ryan on Fox’s Murder in a small townbroadcast on Tuesday, October 21.
Posey also revealed that he is a great admirer of author Freida McFadden’s work, saying: “I am a huge fan of Freida McFadden’s writing and her first film. [The Housemaid] is about to come out. So I would love to be involved in any of that.”
The Teenage wolf alum admitted that he’s ready for “more of this genre” when it comes to future roles.
“I actually have a murder mystery [and horror] project that I wrote and that we will be filming soon,” he said. “I am all for it.”
In his guest appearance op Murder in a small townPosey plays a high school student who finds an injured body in the woods, sparking an investigation tied to an old, unsolved case.
“Everything about the show was appealing,” he said.
“I’m a big fan of murder mystery whodunnits and there’s just something so appealing about them. You get so drawn into the content and the audience really gets to play along. It’s this piece of the puzzle that the audience is trying to figure out all the time.”
Posey said what made the series even more interesting was the setting: a beautiful seaside town with dark secrets.
“One thing that’s cool about the show is that it’s set in this picturesque and beautiful seaside town. There’s a lot of murder and trouble underneath,” he explained.
“That’s really cool symbolism for a lot of these guest stars, especially my character, Ryan.”
The actor added that part of what draws audiences to the show is how it explores human nature.
“People love to look at human nature [stories] and to be able to respond and resonate with these characters,” he said.
“Ryan is just so complex, troubled and sad. You feel for him and the nice thing about this character is that many viewers will find a lot of sympathy for him.”
Towards the end of the episode, fans were surprised to see Posey’s character revealed as the killer, a twist that the actor says they worked on carefully.
“We wanted it to be very natural because we wanted him to actually be that character,” he explained.
“Everything is really with him and we really based it on the reality that he was very concerned. You know, he was, but to the audience it just seems like he’s concerned about his friend – rather than concerned about his own livelihood.”
Posey said the goal was to make sure the revelation wasn’t obvious too early.
“We had to find a balance between keeping this man very concerned and remaining frivolous with him,” he said.
“That’s the hope I have for everyone who watches the show, because that’s the nature of these shows. You don’t want to know who did it until the end.”
By Teenage wolf From heartthrob to murder mystery suspect, Posey is clearly embracing a darker, more layered side of storytelling, and if he has his way, we might see him solve (or commit) crimes alongside Daniel Craig. Knives out one day.
