James Cameron, best known for directing The Aliens sequel, did not outright but in a measured way praise the other installment in the franchise.
“It’s interesting. The new ‘Alien Earth’ is pretty good. And they have a lot of the DNA from Ridley’s movie, from ours, and also from [David] Fincher’s too. Some of those aggressive POVs,” he says Just goofing off with Michael Biehn podcast, referring to the 2025 show on FX.
For Fede Álvarez Alien: Romulus, James says, “Yes, I’ve seen it. I like parts of it. I think it’s inventive. It’s different. I feel like Ridley is more…”
While it’s not an overwhelming endorsement, the director adds, “Fede also did something interesting. I especially like the scene where they’re weightless, floating among blobs of floating alien acid, you know, which is quite nightmarish and well done.”
Until the Neil Blomkamp Alien 5 film, which was scrapped, the Avatar director shares: “I don’t know anything about that. I know Neil, from a distance, and I’ve corresponded a little bit, but I don’t know the details of that. But he’s very inventive.”
However, James has rejected the suggestion that he return to direct Alien. “Yeah, you couldn’t pay me enough money to go back to that franchise there. It’s almost become kind of fan-driven.”
It is worth noting that he directed Alienssequel to the 1979 film, which received critical acclaim.
