Drew Barrymore reflects on the heartbreaking body shaming she faced at the age of 10

Drew Barrymore opened up about how people made her feel insecure about her body when she was just 10.

During a recent episode of her show, The Drew Barrymore Show, the 50-year-old actress recalled a heartbreaking memory from her childhood when she was scrutinized for her physique.

Showing off an old photo of herself, Drew said, “This photo… It just breaks my heart. I was ten years old and everyone told me, ‘You don’t look like you did on ET. You’re too heavy. You’re not blonde enough. You’re not old enough. You’re too young. You’re not tall.’ And everyone just started worrying about how I looked.”

Valerie Bertinelli, who appeared as a guest on the show, expressed her disbelief at the criticism of a young actress.

Drew went on to say, “It’s like I don’t know what to be to other people. And you don’t know yourself at 10. What I’m so relieved about now is that it’s 40 years later, I’m 50… I know what’s important now, and the look in my eyes is so clear.”

“It’s nice to know that no matter how low things get, or how much pressure we feel, or how proud we are of ourselves, or how we fail to please someone else, or how we don’t fit into some mold that someone has created for us… that true, true happiness is simply the choice we make,” she shared her two cents.

Revealing how she struggled with inner struggles to regain her self-confidence, Drew added: “It’s a battle and a beautiful internal war that we fight day in and day out on the front lines to get to a place where we can actually say and believe this phrase, which is, ‘I deserve happiness.’ That if it takes a long time to find out, it’s not a problem. As long as we learn it once.”
