Stargazers have the opportunity to witness the Northern Lights, which could remain visible at high latitudes tonight (Jan. 13-14) as Earth continues to feel the effects of solar winds.
Geomagnetic conditions have decreased since last weekend’s intense storms; However, space weather remains unsettled, keeping the chance of auroras alive for far northern areas.
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction and Britain’s The Met Office have revealed that with increased solar wind speeds, fast solar wind has become the dominant driving force.
Meanwhile, conditions could support G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm levels, although activity is expected to be more variable earlier this week.
Additionally, the Northern Lights are likely to be confined to higher latitudes, with the best chances in northern Canada, Alaska and parts of northern Europe, including northern Scotland, when skies are clear.
The British Met Office has further indicated that unsettled geomagnetic activity may continue until January 14 due to further strengthening from the easternmost part of a corona hole.
The intense solar storms earlier this month have calmed down, but current solar winds are strong enough to produce spectacular, glittering displays.
