Robert Downey Jr. discusses the fate of a possible third ‘Sherlock Holmes’ film

Robert Downey Jr. has said the future of another Sherlock Holmes film depends largely on his wife, Susan Downey.

The 61-year-old actor revealed the details at the Lincoln Center Spring Gala on May 18 when he was asked if fans could expect a third. Sherlock Holmes film following the success of the 2009 original and its 2011 sequel.

The actor responded by pointing to his wife, Susan Downey, who produced the films for 21 years, and said, “People talk about it, but she’s the producer.”

When asked again about returning to the role of the famous detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle, Downey Jr. joked. that his wife would ‘have the last word’.

The Emmy-winning producer, Susan Downey, then playfully replied, “It’s the biggest mystery.”

The Guy Richie-directed original films enjoyed great success at the box office and reignited interest in the classic detective character for new audiences.

A third film has been discussed for years. Warner Bros. first confirmed development plans in 2016 and later announced a planned 2021 release date, but the project was ultimately postponed and disappeared from the studio’s release schedule.
