Duane Betts has opened up about how he felt working on his new song, which pays tribute to his late father Dickey Betts.
For those who don’t know, Dickey died on April 18, 2024 at the age of 80. The celebrated American guitarist and singer, whose cause of death was cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), was surrounded by his family at the time of his death at his home in Osprey, Florida.
On the second anniversary of the death of his father and member of the legendary Allman Brothers Band, Duane revealed PEOPLE magazine that he is working on a solo track titled Heartbreak.
The 48-year-old American guitarist and singer-songwriter told the outlet that it is a small effort to pay tribute to his father, who gave his whole life to music. Also, Heartbreak comes from a place of recognition and healing, as his father’s death is the greatest loss for him.
Expressing his thoughts, he said: “Heartache is obviously a very personal song to me. It’s the most personal song I’ve ever written.”
“It was written right after my father passed away… it’s the experience of losing my father and getting through that and coming out the other side,” Duane explained.
In particular the It’s raining inside crooner also brought the energy of many people he has said goodbye to over the years into the song.
He joked: “Once you move on, you realize… it’s about all of them. It’s about my dad, it’s about my friends – it’s about all my loved ones that I’ve lost.”
