Cynthia Erivo Gives Her Unfiltered Take on the Wool Cardigan Controversy in ‘Wicked’

Cynthia Erivo recently got candid and opened up about the controversy surrounding her gray wool cardigan Bad: forever.

For those who don’t know, Erivo’s character Elphaba wore a ‘s*x vest’ during the romantic song As long as you’re mine, in which she and Prince Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey) become physically intimate to cement their relationship in a PG-rated way.

While the scene, especially her cozy designer clothes, received mixed reviews, from pure obsession to criticism, the 38-year-old English actress, singer and songwriter also expressed her thoughts in a conversation with Term.

Erivo said, “The idea was to record the song with all her armor on, with the hat, the coat and the cape. And I thought about a few things. One: why, if she was in a space that was her own space, where she felt most safe and comfortable, would she still be in her armor?”

“And second, when do we get a chance to see her green from head to toe? When do we get reminded that it’s not just makeup? I know there have been conversations about seducing her and all that, but honestly, that’s just not the case.”

“We find out long before this moment that Fiyero loves Elphaba, and that he sees something in her that is different from what other people see. All I really wanted was for everyone to see her as someone who is vulnerable, soft, sometimes clumsy, and anxious. Someone who doesn’t. [always] necessarily believe in themselves,” said the Pinocchio star explained.

It is relevant to mention that Bad: forever was released on November 21, 2025.
