The driver of boxing star Anthony Joshua was charged with the fatal accident in Nigeria that killed two people on Monday, December 29, 2025.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was arraigned at the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 2, 2026.
As reported by BBC, police sources said the charges included dangerous driving, which caused the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, on Monday, December 29, 2025, after the vehicle they were riding in crashed into a stationary truck on a highway in Ogun State, near Lagos.
Fortunately, Anthony Joshua survived the accident.
The former heavyweight champion was taken to hospital with injuries after the crash and was discharged on Wednesday.
Prosecutors have filed four charges against Mr. Kayode: causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid driver’s license, a police source said.
In addition, the defendant was granted bail of 5,000,000 Naira (£2,578) and remanded in custody until his bail conditions were met.
The case has been postponed until January 20, 2026.
Joshua, 36, was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a parked truck on the busy Lagos-Ibadan highway in southwestern Nigeria on December 29, 2025.
Mr Ghami and Mr Ayodele were both pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua was pictured being helped from the wreckage.
Joshua came back from the hospital
After being released from the hospital, Joshua visited the funeral home where their bodies were “being prepared for repatriation,” reports BBC.
Officials from Ogun State and Lagos said in a statement that the British boxer was “heartfelt” about the deaths of the two men, both of whom were his close friends.
Just hours before the crash, Joshua posted a video on Instagram of himself playing table tennis with Mr Ayodele.
In addition, Eddie Hearn, who has been Joshua’s promoter for more than a decade, paid tribute to the team members.
“Rest in peace Latz and Sina,” Hearn posted on Instagram. “Your energy and loyalty, among so many other wonderful qualities, will be deeply missed. Praying for strength and guidance for all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time.”
Paul posted on
The boxer spent time in Nigeria following his recent victory over American YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul on December 19, 2025.
