Alex de Minaur faces surprise elimination in Acapulco thriller by Patrick Kypson

Alex de Minaur suffered a surprise first-round exit at HSBC’s presentation of Abierto Mexicano Telcel after falling in three sets to American Patrick Kypson on Monday.

Kypson defeated the second seed 6-1, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) in a match that lasted two hours and 39 minutes. The win was Kypson’s first tour-level victory since Indian Wells in 2024.

After the match, Kypson said: “It feels great. Everything was important. I had to serve well. I had to return well. I did my forehand really well. Luckily I was able to do those things for quite a long time.”

De Minaur played his first tournament since winning the Rotterdam title two weeks ago.

The Australian had a chance to close out the match while serving at 5-4 in the final set, but Kypson broke back and forced a tiebreak to seal the win.

According to Infosys ATP Stats, Kypson won 71 percent of his first serve points and converted three of five break points.

The 26-year-old American rises to number 93 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and will face Brandon Nakashima in the second round.
