Reggie Bannister, the iconic horror star, is battling severe Lewy Body dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
The 80-year-old actor, known for his appearance in the Phantasm franchise, is receiving hospice care at home but will have to move to a full-time care facility.
His wife Gigi, whom he married in 2001, stood by her husband’s side and cared for him. But due to her own health issues, she no longer has the physical capacity to assist the actor.
She inquired TMZ in an article that Bannister has lost mobility in his limbs and explained that she can no longer lift or move the actor.
He initially had plans to move to a full-time facility in Big Bear, California, where he would be covered by Veterans Affairs. However, since there is no longer availability, this is no longer an option.
Another facility has monthly costs of more than $5,000 and a GoFundMe page has been started to help cover “overwhelming” medical costs as Bannister’s health takes a “difficult turn.”
The page was set up by a close friend of the couple and the current goal of $50,000 is almost reached.
But Gigi told the outlet that because Bannister cannot get coverage through Veterans Affairs, they will most likely need more money to cover the costs of another facility.
The actor is currently on a waiting list for a full-time care facility.
In a post on the GoFundMe page, Bannister is described as a star who has “brought joy and inspiration to countless fans over the years.”
The message also stated, “The money raised through this campaign will go directly toward covering medical expenses and utility bills, and ensuring Reggie receives the hospice care he needs in the comfort of his own home.”
“Your support will help ease the financial burden on Gigi and allow her to focus on what matters most: being there for Reggie during this incredibly difficult time,” it continued.
Finally, the good friend who set up the page called on the horror and entertainment community to support Bannister and his wife in any way they can.
“Mrs. Gigi Bannister vows never to leave his side and needs our help with his hospice care at home. My fellow fans and kind-hearted members of our community, please help support this legendary horror icon in his battle against dementia and Parkinson’s disease,” concluded the message for Reggie Bannister’s GoFundMe.
