Don Cheadle and Ayo Edebiri collaborated on the Broadway revival of Evidencemaking them a father-daughter duo on stage.

Despite starring in a project for the first time, the pair says they effortlessly stepped into the characters of what the show depicted as a troubled family.

The pair hit it off without much effort, so much so that Cheadle, who already has two daughters, says he goes into full dad mode and checks out during the show The Bear actress offstage to see if she’s been using her phone lately.

“I check what time she goes to bed. And if she texts too late, I say, ‘Hey, we have a show tomorrow!'” he says. CBS News.

Edebiri, on the other hand, was in awe of Cheadle and said she was over the moon when she landed a role alongside the Iron man star was offered. “He’s on my Mount Rushmore among actors.”

In Evidencethe messy family dynamic is laid bare, with Cheadle playing Robert, a math rock star suffering from mental health issues.

While his daughter, Edebiri, plays Catherine, his daughter focuses on caring for her elderly father while putting her life on pause.

The role, the actress says, made her reflect on her personal life, and at one point the child becomes the caregiver after being asked about it.

“It’s kind of hard not to do it. It’s a weird thing that we all go through and you don’t realize you’re going to experience. When it changes and you suddenly realize, ‘Oh, now I’m taking care of my parents. Now my parents are kind of like my child.'”
