Inside Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s upcoming Netflix rom-com

A look inside Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s upcoming Netflix rom-com

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are taking another step in their Netflix partnership with the announcement of an upcoming romantic comedy based on Jasmine Guillory’s bestseller The Wedding Date.

The project will be produced through the couple’s production company, Archewell, and marks their first foray into scripted feature films. The film is an adaptation of The Wedding Date, a novel first published in 2018 by author Jasmine Guillory. This will be the first scripted film to go into production under Harry and Meghan’s deal with Netflix.

Reports about the project emerged just months after it was revealed that the Sussexes’ relationship with Netflix had evolved into a multi-year, first-look deal spanning both film and television.

Although the couple originally signed a high-profile deal with the streamer in 2020, this new structure would give them more flexibility in the types of projects they develop.

Despite Meghan’s background as an actor, it’s clear she won’t be appearing on screen in The Wedding Date. Instead, her role as producer will remain firmly behind the camera.

According to Industry Outlet Deadline, screenwriter Tracy Oliver has been signed to adapt Guillory’s novel for the big screen.

The story centers on Alexa Monroe, a career-driven woman who agrees to attend a wedding with a man she meets in an elevator, Drew Nichols.

What starts as a fake date soon turns into something more, with Guillory previously describing the novel as a “fun and flirty” exploration of modern romance and unexpected connections.

At this time, no casting details or release date have been announced, but the completed film will stream exclusively on Netflix.

Earlier this year, Meghan was spotted on the set of an Amazon MGM Studios film titled Close Personal Friends, where she is expected to appear as herself.
