John Cusack Reflects on Collaborating with Sister Joan in ‘Say Anything’

John Cusack has reflected on working with sister Joan Cusack in the 1989 romantic comedy Say Anything.

During the film’s screening at the Kings Theater in New York City, the actor shared memories. He described the experience as “a pretty easy gig.”

Noting the ease of working with your sister, John said, “What happens is she comes in and then I’m in the scene with her. She hits me like a Mack Truck and they say, print it, and then it’s everyone’s favorite thing in the movie.”

“I just flat out like Wile E. Coyote and everyone thinks I’m a genius,” he added.

John said: ‘Joanie was actually more optimistic than me. She always told me to be in a good mood, but I think it was written that his sister had gone through a bad breakup and all that.”

Say Anything remains the most iconic collaboration between the Cusack siblings, although they were once rumored to be in contention for roles on The Breakfast Club. However, the project did not come to fruition.

Yet John Cusack and Joan Cusack separately built celebrated careers in Hollywood.
