Coco Gauff loses first set 7-5 to Solana Sierra in Italian Open shocker

Coco Gauff and Solana Sierra battle each other in a nail-biting match at the Italian Open in Rome.

However, the match took a dramatic turn and left Gauff fans in shock when Solana Sierra finally came out swinging to take the first set 7-5, proving she can compete with the world’s best on clay.

However, Third Seed Coco Gauff answered in a huge way. In the second set she hit back with 6-0,

Sierra even went up an early break in the third, but Gauff is currently trying to get back into the lead.

It’s a stark contrast to their meeting at the United Cup earlier this year, where Coco cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Sierra is clearly a different player on the red dirt.

Gauff has suffered some inconsistency during this 2026 clay swing, including a pair of early exits in Stuttgart and Madrid

However, the third set is still ongoing.

There were certain projections going on before the match. For example, Coco Gauff is expected to win with an 88.2 percent probability, leaving Solana Sierra with just an 11.8% chance of an upset.

Financial valuations reflect this difference, with Gauff listed as a heavy favorite on the moneyline at -1099, while Sierra is at +770.
