Scientists have been baffled by a fierce Antarctic snowstorm that itself broke off a chunk of ice, sending shipping containers filled with fuel into the sea on a floating iceberg.
However, they look like seven little ants, but a closer inspection of the satellite image shows something completely different. The ants are actually large shipping containers filled with diesel and other waste.
While the White Paper is a huge iceberg, 500 meters long and 300 meters wide. The iceberg and shipping containers were spotted floating off the coast of Antarctica earlier this year.
Meanwhile, seven shipping containers had been set up a few hundred meters from the icy coastline in preparation for a ship to collect the station’s waste.
The containers included one containing 9,500 liters of Arctic diesel and four containing municipal solid waste. The logistics team is working efficiently to uncover an iceberg approximately 500 meters deep that has drifted into the Weddell Sea.
In this context, German Antarctic officials are considering evaluating the use of an aircraft to search for the missing containers.
It can be assumed that the iceberg disintegrated shortly afterwards and the containers sank to the seabed,” the report said.
It suggested the four containers containing household items and waste would have “little direct impact on the ecosystem”.
However, the report said the container filled with fuel posed a much greater risk.
“It can be assumed that it was either damaged by the fall into the sea or imploded on its way to the seabed.”
The report identified Arctic diesel as a lighter and more volatile petroleum fraction than heavy fuel oil.
Reports further indicate that Antarctica’s low temperatures will slow biodegradation in open water or sea ice. While glaciological research, including the thickness and consistency of the ice, will be carried out along the route from Neumayer Station III to the ice harbour.
It is crucial to note that the report was presented at the annual Antarctic Consultative Meeting, which concluded on Thursday in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
