A global outage hit Amazon’s cloud services on Monday, the subsidiary’s maintenance site said, disrupting many websites and services including Amazon Prime, Perplexity, Fortnite, Alexa, Snapchat and Duolingo.
Posts on the maintenance site for Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed “increased error rates” for multiple services and said technicians were working to restore operations.
AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and trading app Robinhood attributed the outages to AWS.
“Perplexity is currently down. The root cause is an AWS issue. We are working to resolve it,” Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, said in a post on X.
AWS provides on-demand computing power, data storage and other digital services to businesses, governments and individuals. Server disruptions can cause disruptions to websites and platforms that rely on cloud infrastructure. AWS competes with the cloud services of Google and Microsoft.
AWS and Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.
According to Downdetector, Amazon’s shopping website, Prime Video and Alexa all had issues.
Epic Games-owned Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale and Clash of Clans were among the gaming sites that were offline, while Paypal’s Venmo and Chime were among the financial platforms that faced issues, the outage tracking website said.
Uber rival Lyft’s app was also unavailable to thousands of users in the US.
Messaging app Signal’s president Meredith Whittaker also confirmed on X that their platform was also affected by the AWS outage.
