Lewis Pullman admits that ‘best dad’ Bill Pullman’s fame took him by surprise

Lewis Pullman had no idea his father, Bill Pullman, was a “big deal.”

In a recent chat on Interview magazine with fellow actor Paul Walter Hauser, he talked about how as a child he wondered why his father, Bill, had that Space balls and Independence Day star, was approached by people while they were on a family outing.

The 32-year-old actor recalled his childhood concerns, saying, “I think one thing that me and all my siblings had a pretty good radar for was ulterior motives. Even as a kid you could pick up on like, ‘Why does anyone want this from my dad? Why do people expect this from him and where does that come from?'”

The Top Gun: Maverick star said his family “rarely” went out to eat.

“It was always my mom making dinner. But every time we did that, someone would come over,” he noted, adding, “And I always thought, ‘Well, what’s the big deal? I mean, he’s the best dad ever, but they don’t know that.'”

“And once I got into acting and started to understand the extent of his talent, I thought, ‘Okay, there should be a lot more people asking him to give this speech on Independence Day,'” Lewis said, pointing out his father’s famous speech in the 1996 action film.

Paul responded by watching Bill’s films and saying, “I always saw your father as a relatable, pure man.”
