Dax Shepard reflects on his near-death experience that calmed him down.
Kaley Cuoco made a guest appearance on the latest episode of Dax’s Armchair expert podcast.
During the conversation, Dax recalled that he and one of his high school friends were once in a near-fatal car accident.
“I don’t know what the definition is, but I had a moment—one of the most unique feelings I’ve ever had in my life—where I thought, ‘Oh, I’m about to die.’ I am just seconds away from death,” Dax said of a near-death experience.
The podcast host said he and his friend were returning to their home in Michigan from Ohio late that evening. His unnamed friend confidently took charge, while Dax rested in the back of the car while he worked the next morning.
“He had the cruise control at 85,” Dax explained. “And I’m back there, I’m listening and then the road was really rhythmic. I just thought at that moment, ‘Oh, that rhythm is nice. I’m going to fall asleep.’ And then I just heard gravel hitting the side of the car.”
He went on to say, “I immediately looked up and he was, um, completely slumped and we had gone off the road. We were doing 85 and the car started going sideways.”
The Parenting alum recalled the terrifying moment, noting that he tried to get back on track, but it was too late.
“I started going over and grabbing the steering wheel,” he said, “and there was a moment where I just knew it was too far away. Like we had gone completely sideways. I laid back down and then we started, we just launched into the air and started rolling right down the highway.”
At that moment he embraced the feeling of death and felt ‘peaceful’.
I definitely had a moment where I thought, ‘Oh wow, I’m about to die,'” Dax continued. “And the feeling was shockingly comforting, that’s how I remember it. I went into complete fear: ‘S*** the car is out of control, oh my god, we’re going to roll. F*** we’re rolling, I’m going to die.’ Like all that math – and then I just became really calm.”
“I was completely at peace with it in a strange way,” he added.
The car rolled almost 10 times, but both Dax and his friend were fine.
Kaley called the accident “terrifying.”
