‘One Battle After Another’ pushes back on claim about 2025 movies

Paul Thomas Anderson says 2025 is shaping up to be good for bold, original films

Some critics say 2025 is a weak year for movies, but Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed One battle after another, a critically acclaimed film this year, disagrees.

“The entire industry is constantly complaining. Things always go wrong,” he says LeMonde, sharing a list of films he believes are daring and original that were released this year.

“But let’s look at this year: Eddington, Weapons, Bugonia, two Richard Linklater films (Nouvelle Vague and Blue Moon), Sentimental Value, Marty Supreme, which is coming out.”

“Anyone who wants to start complaining about films should cool it down. Where is Sinners? You have to mention them, otherwise you are a criminal.”

But Paul does express his frustration that films on streaming drop out too quickly. “Do I think things are being put on streaming too quickly? Yes, I do. I think that’s annoying. I think a lot of things that happen in Hollywood are self-inflicted wounds.”

In the meantime, One battle after another gets a lot of praise. Jennifer Lawrence also raved about it recently, noting the scene in the movie where Leonardo DiCaprio struggles to remember a password while talking into a phone booth. “This is the best movie I’ve ever seen. This is ‘One Battle After Another.'”

She added: “I can’t remember a time when I’ve ever had an experience like that in the cinema, and it was shared.”

“When it was over, everyone applauded. I kept thanking my husband over and over for booking the tickets two weeks in advance, and all I could say was thank you for this experience,” Jennifer concluded.
