A new Covid-19 variant first identified in South Africa in November 2024 has now spread globally to at least 23 countries and has been detected in 25 US states through wastewater surveillance. The nickname ‘Cicada’ comes because it appeared in large numbers after going unnoticed for a long time. It contains 70-75 mutations on its spike protein, about double the amount found in recent predecessors such as JN.1.
Impact on immunity and vaccines
Because of the large number of mutations, experts worry the variant could more easily evade immunity from previous infections or current vaccines. Although the current vaccine designed for the Omicron line still provides some protection, studies show that the immune response against BA.3.2 is weaker compared to other dominant strains such as XFG.
Symptoms and severity
Symptoms remain consistent with previous strains including fever, cough and congestion with some cases of gastrointestinal distress. Early evidence suggests the variant is no more severe or causes higher death rates than previous versions of the virus.
Public health prospects
Experts say there is no need to panic even though COVID-19 is still causing 300 to 500 deaths a week in the U.S. now that the virus has settled into a manageable seasonal pattern. The primary focus remains on protecting vulnerable populations through standard measures. Health officials continue to monitor the strain to see if it becomes prevalent or dominant, or if future mutations lead to more serious diseases that could strain the health care system.
