Anne Hathaway Names A-List Star Who Helped Cast ‘Mother Mary’

Anne Hathaway revealed that she is preparing for her role in the film Mother Mary she followed the advice of none other than the Brat artist, Charli XCX.

The 43-year-old actress plays the titular character in the new psychological drama thriller, which follows the psychosexual affair between pop singer Mary and fashion designer Sam, and Anne has revealed she has approached Charli to prepare for her role.

She told me PEOPLE magazine: “The person I was talking to was Charli… I wanted to talk to her about the music, she wrote such great music that I started performing. But I also just had a lot of questions for her about what her life was like, what the experience of being a pop star was like.”

Anne’s respect for pop stars, and other people in the music world more broadly, increased during the filming of the film.

“I just realized that pop stars are endurance athletes who can do it all in platform heels. They’re the most charming people in the world and they have this crazy confidence, like they’re so driven to share what’s inside them,” she admitted.

Mother Mary is directed by David Lowery, and he recently revealed it’s from Taylor Swift Reputation concert film played a big role in inspiring some scenes.

He told it Empire magazine: “The concert film Her Reputation is one of the best concert films ever. It is truly phenomenal. And for our concert sequences we watched it repeatedly. You wouldn’t believe how much time we spent talking about Taylor.”

The filmmaker continued, “We took three issues of Reputation and broke them down piece by piece, and looked at it like, ‘Okay, if we were to make these, how much would these shots cost in terms of visual effects?’

“We used that as a budgeting tool because we didn’t know how to wrap our heads around actually putting on a concert show in a stadium on a minimal budget. We literally used Reputation as a guide. I could go on all day about Reputation,” he said of how Anne Hathaway’s starrer, Mother Mary, was inspired.
