Indonesia said it has suspended the registration status of Tiktok as a provider for electronic system after it had not handed all data related to the use of the live stream function, although the app for social media was still accessible to users on Friday.
Alexander Sabar, an official in the communication and digital operation of Indonesia, said in a statement, a few accounts with ties with online gambling activities used Tiktok’s live stream function during recent national protests and earned it.
Protests cradled the third largest democracy in the world about exorbitant legislative fees and police violence from the end of August to September. Tiktok has temporarily suspended its live function during the protests and said that this was meant to “keep a safe and bourgeois space”.
Sabar said that the government then asked the company for information about traffic, streaming and income. The company, owned by China’s Bytedance, only provided partial data, referring to its internal procedures, Sabar said.
“So the communication and the digital ministry considered Tiktok as his obligations as a private electronic provider violated,” and his registration suspended, he said.
The Regulation with regard to the list states that every company that has registered with the Indonesia license rules hands over its data to the government to be blocked supervision or risk.
Tiktok, which has established more than 100 million accounts in Indonesia, did not respond to a request for comments.
It was unclear whether access to Tiktok in Indonesia was completely blocked. Reuters Wash access to the application on Friday as normal. The ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
