Millions of users around the world were left without connections on Tuesday after WhatsApp suffered a major outage that disrupted messaging services on both mobile and web platforms.
According to Downdetector, which tracks service disruptions, the first reports came in around 7pm in Pakistan, with complaints increasing sharply within an hour.
Users from several countries – including Britain, Pakistan, Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica, Italy and the United States – reported chats failing to load and messages not being delivered.
The issue affected both the mobile and web versions of the app.
In Pakistan, the outage peaked at around 8pm with more than a hundred reports of connection disruptions, while thousands of similar complaints were registered worldwide.
Downdetector’s data showed that more than 80% of reported issues were related to WhatsApp Web, suggesting users were unable to connect via browsers, Mirror UK reported.
Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has not yet commented on the cause of the disruption or provided a timeline for restoring service.
The platform has more than three billion monthly active users worldwide.
