Leonardo DiCaprio offers a rare glimpse into how he manages life under constant surveillance.
The 51-year-old actor was named TIME’s 2025 Entertainer of the Year on December 8 and discussed the approach he developed after spending his entire adult life in the public eye.
“It’s a balance I’ve been working on my entire adult life,” he noted, adding that he still doesn’t consider himself an expert.
He explained that his rule is to only appear in public when there is a real purpose. “Only go out and do something if you have something to say, or if you have something to show. Otherwise, just disappear as much as possible.”
DiCaprio recalled the rise to fame after 1997’s Titanic, and how the global fixation was overwhelming, even though he found the fame exciting.
“I thought, OK, how can I have a long career? … The best way is to get out of people’s attention.”
The actor remains private about his personal life, including his relationship with model Vittoria Ceretti, with whom he has been dating for over two years.
Although he has never spoken publicly about her, Ceretti quietly supported him at the September premiere of One battle after another in Los Angeles.
