Just a few days after the White House joined Tiktok, US President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that he could extend the deadline for Bytedance in China to sell his American assets and said that American buyers are ready to acquire it.
Speaking with reporters, Trump rejected two -part safety problems about Tiktok and said that his administration would pay attention to any problems. He said he would talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping “at the right time.”
The Republican president has repeatedly chosen not to enforce the deadline after the approval of a 2024 law that requires Tiktok to stop working by January 19 of this year. He recently pushed the deadline until 17 September.
The White House arrived at the app on Tuesday.
“I didn’t talk to President Xi about it,” Trump told reporters during a visit to a gift shop of the White House across the Presidential Home. “In the meantime, until the complexity of things succeeds, we just stretch a little longer.”
“We have very substantial American buyers who want to buy it,” he added, without calling people or companies.
Asked if he was worried about privacy or national security, Trump said: “I really am not. I think it is very overestimated … I am a fan of Tiktok.”
Last year’s law requires Bytedance to divest the American assets of the app or to show considerable progress in the direction of a sale. Trump chose not to enforce it after taking office on January 20.
Some legislators have criticized the delay and claim that his administration protrudes the law and ignores concern about national security with regard to Chinese control of Tiktok.
