Canadian tennis players Gabriel Diallo and Denis Shapovalov both advanced during the tournament in Indian Wells, while Bianca Andreescu was eliminated in the first round.
Diallo, a 24-year-old from Montreal, ranked number 38 in the world, defeated Italian Mattia Bellucci in straight sets on Wednesday.
Diallo defeated 94th-ranked Bellucci 7-6 (5), 6-4 to advance to the second round of the ATP event.
The victory was Diallo’s first victory on the ATP Tour in almost two months after being knocked out in the first round of his previous four tournaments, when he recorded 10 aces and committed only one double fault during the match.
Later in the day, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas to also advance.
Diallo will next face Russian Andrei Rublev, the tournament’s seventeenth seed. Shapovalov will face Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the 29th seed.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Quebec lost to Frenchman Gael Monfils.
In the women’s competition, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario lost to Kamilla Rakhimova of Uzbekistan.
Andreescu, who won the Indian Wells title in 2019, recorded 12 aces but suffered five double faults.
Canadian Marina Stakusic also left the tournament after losing to Austrian Anastasia Potapova.
