Neymar has been named in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup despite ongoing concerns over his fitness after a long recovery from injury.
The 34-year-old Santos forward will appear at his fourth World Cup.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, has struggled to stay consistently fit since tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee in October 2023.
Brazilian coach Carlo Ancelotti defended the decision during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.
“He has improved his fitness. He will be an important player at this World Cup,” Ancelotti said.
The Italian manager also emphasized the importance of experienced players at major tournaments. “He can still improve his fitness until the first match of the World Cup,” Ancelotti added.
“He has experience with these types of competitions, the love of our group; he can create a better climate in this group.”
Brazil’s 26-man squad also includes Vinicius Júnior and Raphinha, while Lyon striker Endrick and Bournemouth striker Rayan earned their first World Cup call-ups.
Brazil starts its tournament campaign against Morocco in New Jersey on June 13 before facing Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
