The concept of “dimming the sun” exists as a science fiction concept that seems impossible to realize. However, recent online claims linking Bill Gates to this supposed scheme have become more popular.
Several videos are going viral on social media, showing the sun’s light being blocked by layers of clouds, claiming it to be an experiment by Gates to lower the Earth’s temperature by dimming the sunlight; people want to know the truth behind these claims.
What is solar geoengineering?
Solar geoengineering involves using sunlight reflection methods to lower planetary temperatures through space-based light deflection. Scientists are studying stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) techniques that simulate volcanic eruption patterns that have historically caused cooling effects on global temperatures.
Gates has supported research examining whether this could help limit climate change, including studies related to Harvard University’s SCoPEx experiment, but the work remains in simulations and modeling, not real-world work.
Is there actually someone who changes Sun?
To date, no country or corporate entity is changing the amount of sunlight that falls on the Earth. All experiments remain small-scale or theoretical. Researchers highlight the difference between funding research and carrying out large-scale geoengineering projects.
Experts believe that the solar geoengineering methods that scientists have developed for their research will lead to dangerous results. The changes scientists have made to sunlight will cause disruptions in rainfall patterns, trigger droughts in specific areas and impact the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the ozone layer.
The process does not eliminate greenhouse gases, resulting in a continued buildup of carbon dioxide. Scientists warn of a “termination shock,” which will occur when people stop their climate interventions, because this will lead to rapid temperature increases.
