OpenAI on Tuesday launched ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser built around its chatbot that aims to loosen Google Chrome’s tight grip on the market.
“This is an AI-powered web browser built around ChatGPT,” OpenAI chief Sam Altman said in a streamed presentation.
The browser is now available worldwide on Apple’s macOS. It will be available soon on Windows, iOS and Android.
Shares of Alphabet, owner of the Chrome browser, fell 2.6% in afternoon trading.
The product is the latest entrant in a rapidly growing field of AI browsers, including Perplexity’s Comet and Opera’s Neon, as companies build in tools that can summarize pages, fill out forms and build code to attract users.
Atlas allows users to open a ChatGPT sidebar in any window to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from any site.
In agent mode in Atlas, ChatGPT communicates with sites for users, who can use it to complete end-to-end tasks such as researching and shopping for a trip.

Reuters had reported in July that the Microsoft-backed AI startup was about to release an AI-powered web browser that would challenge Alphabet’s market-dominating Google Chrome.
