The Jonas Brothers took the stage on October 25 during Game 2 of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Rogers Center in Toronto.
The band sang their song I can’t lose from their album Greetings from your hometown, marking a memorable – and somewhat unexpected – moment in the middle of the game.
The score was tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning when play was stopped for the annual Stand Up to Cancer tribute.
During the moving segment, players, fans and broadcasters held up signs with the names of loved ones affected by cancer.
Immediately following the tribute, the Jonas Brothers appeared on stage, with an announcer explaining that their performance was dedicated to people living with cancer.
The abrupt transition from a solemn tribute to an upbeat performance surprised many viewers, leading to a wave of online reactions.
When Major League Baseball shared a photo of the brothers’ performance on Instagram with the caption, “SPEECHLESS, OVER THE EDGE, JUST ADEMLESS – The @JonasBrothers are here at #WorldSeries Game 2!”, Joe Jonas humorously chimed in in the comments, writing, “Why these guys?”
Aside from Joe’s cheeky response, the band has not publicly responded to the buzz surrounding their performance.
Before the event, they released a statement expressing pride in performing on such a meaningful occasion: “We are proud to celebrate our partnership with Mastercard in support of Stand Up to Cancer during such a meaningful moment during the World Series with a performance of ‘I Can’t Lose’ in tribute to this powerful campaign. As lifelong baseball fans, it is special to be part of a moment where music and purpose come together.”
After the performance, the Jonas Brothers continued their tour in Orlando. The next day, Kevin Jonas announced his debut solo single, Changewhich will be released on November 20.
He first performed the song solo in August at the band’s Boston show, telling the crowd, “I’m super nervous, so be patient,” before launching into the heartfelt song.
