A bizarre incident involving golf superstar Rory McIlroy took place during the second round of the 2025 Australian Open, where a misstep became the final hurdle to his Australian Open title hopes.
According to The Guardianthe world’s No. 2 ranked player kept his momentum with three birdies late in his second round when he arrived on course early on Saturday.
After his backswing hit a tree (earlier in the round), the Northern Irishman’s ball found the rough on the second hole and settled under a grassy clump.
The shot was harder than expected as the ball was draped in a clump of grass, but McIlroy was unable to clear the shot for fear of a penalty if the ball moved.
It is a loose impediment and it was on the ball. If I had moved the banana peel the ball would have moved so I just didn’t even try. McIlroy said.
He further explained, “I mean, I shouldn’t have been there in the first place, but yeah, I wasn’t the best to start.” Rory didn’t hit the green this time.
However, after an errant shot, his efforts saw him get enough to set up a comfortable birdie putt, which he reportedly converted.
The 36-year-old is the main asset of the Australian Open and is generating huge interest in this year’s tournament.
He felt that if everything went his way, he could definitely get a pretty good score there, but whether that would be good enough or not, he wasn’t sure.
Nevertheless, he is determined to play his best tomorrow and keep his Australian Open hopes alive this weekend after his successful recovery despite the blunder.
